Questions & Answers

Q.

What is the difference between an Internship and a 'Careership'?

A.

Essentially they are the same thing. An Internship or 'Careership' is a volunteer work placement, where you will be working alongside professional staff, and gaining experience relevant to your career aspirations. You will be given real duties and responsibilities which will give you first-hand experience and working knowledge on-the-job.

Q.

Why should I use Global Nomadic?

A.

There are many websites out there which advertise volunteer projects, adding huge commissions to the price of the project of which very little of the money goes back to helping the cause you are willing to work for. Global Nomadic adds ZERO commission to the price of the projects, and puts you directly in touch with who you will be working with. Our flat placement fee covers our costs for promoting the project and providing our services.

Global Nomadic specializes in career-building projects, for those looking to actually make a difference to their chosen field of expertise. Our Careership projects are designed to get you a foot in the door to the industry you are pursuing, whilst having fun at the same time.

Q.

Why should I have to pay to participate?

A.

Whilst it seems quite wrong to have to pay to work, it all depends upon what you are working for. If you are taking a job to pay the rent, then obviously you wouldn't be paying to work! But if you are looking to gain experience in an interesting field, then sometimes you must pay for the privilege. If you were to simply apply to get paid to do the same job, you might find it very difficult to get accepted and it may take many months to sort out.

Also, volunteers and interns who pay to do these jobs provide a very much needed income and services to the NGO, often allowing them to continue and expand their work. You will become an invaluable asset to the NGO during your time there, and you are in a much stronger position to actually get paid to do a similar job after you finish.

Q.

How old do I need to be to participate?

A.

All of our projects require you to be at least 18 years old. However it maybe possible to place you if you are under 18 and are accompanied or have a letter of agreement from our parent or guardian.

Q.

I've found a placement. Now what do I do?

A.

Once you have found the placement(s) which are of interest, get in touch with us and we will provide additional information and answer each and every question you may have. We want to be sure that you are aware of everything that you maybe committing to. We will then ask you to fill in an online application form, which we will check with the relevant project coordinator(s). Once it is sure that you can be accepted, and all your questions have been answered, we will be ready to confirm your place. No money will be required until it is sure you have been accepted and you are ready to join.

Check out the Getting Started page for further details.

Q.

When can I go?

A.

Most of our placements are ongoing and you can join whenever suits you best. Be sure to check with us when applying and we will be able to give you the most up to date information and check availability for you.

Q.

What if I want to cut my placement short or extend it further?

A.

We aim to be as flexible as possible and it should not be a problem to extend or cut short your placement whilst you are there, depending upon conditions set by the project coordinator. We will help in every step of the way and mediate between you and the coordinator if necessary.

Q.

Can more than one person go on the same placement?

A.

Yes of-coarse, depending upon availability. If you wish to participate in a project with a friend or group of friends, we can arrange this. Do not hesitate to ask us when applying.

Q.

How do I get to my placement?

A.

Most of our projects will have someone meet you at the airport. If not, you will be given easy to follow instructions on how to get to your project. We will give you full support in all your travel arrangements before you leave.

Q.

What fees are involved?

A.

We try to keep things as simple as possible, however we also wish to be as transparent as possible.

There are two main fees you will need to pay; the Project Fee and the Placement Fee.

The Project Fee is payable directly to the project coordinator either upon arrival, or before you go. This covers the projects costs for making sure you are safe and well looked after, kept busy and making a difference to the area of focus of the project. Depending upon the project, this can include all your food and accommodation also. Check with us if you are unsure.

Global Nomadic add no commission to any project. We instead ask for a placement fee of £249 GBP (approx. $400 USD) to cover our costs for promoting the project and providing our services. We offer full pre departure support and ongoing assistance throughout your trip. We will help you find your flights, visas and vaccinations, and make sure you are well looked after throughout your trip.

You will also need to cover the cost fo your flights, visas (if required) and vaccinations. You should also have a small budget for personal spending, sightseeing and buying souvenirs.

Please note that for the Adventures and Paid Teaching, there is no placement fee. We require a 20% deposit to secure your place.

Q.

Do I need insurance?

A.

Yes! We recommend that all participants purchase adequate travel insurance, as you never know what might happen. We will offer full support in finding affordable and comprehensive insurance once you are ready to go.
