    The NGO you will work with is a Honduran NGO based on the Caribbean island of Utila. Our principal aim is to protect the country's endangered fauna and flora through conservation initiatives.

    Their strategies are to:
    * provide a dynamic environmental education program
    * develop sustainability based on scientific assessment
    * impulse community engagement and participation
    * create and strengthened the links between organisations working for the same aim.

    Our principal project is currently to lead a reptile research and breeding station, in order to protect endemic endangered species, and we have been doing this since 2008. Other scientific projects involve biodiversity studies (insect diversity of the island) and population studies.

    Community linkages are also made through our environmental education program. Firstly, our staff works directly with local schools to integrate environmental education into the normal curricula. Secondly, we use an environmental education centre to offer the community a place to conduct scientific presentations, consult books and access a computer with pedagogic games. Lastly, we have a visitor centre that is dedicated to inform visitors about Ctenosaura bakeri and the other unique species of animals and plants that occur on Utila. We also organise various activities for the benefit of the community like social workshops, cultural and environmental celebrations.

    This is a very flexible placement, meaning you can get involved with what interests you most, ranging from environmental to sociological issues. We are looking for interns to help develop the many facets of our organisation, including;

    * Developing new research activities and conservation measures
    * Seeking new funding avenues
    * Writing project proposals
    * Managing volunteers and helping out in the Information Centre
    * Getting involved in Educational Campaigns, including visiting schools and reaching out to the local Community
    * Composing educational and marketing literature
    * Developing micro-enterpises, such as recycling and eco-tourism initiatives
    * Development of cultural projects linked to media and arts, to foster knowledge and care for the environment
    * Development of social equality measures to improve the living standard of the local population, and linked environmental degradation.
