The state of Rajasthan in Northwest India is one of the poorest regions of the country and as is all too often the case the burden of poverty lies disproportionately with women and young girls who miss out on educational opportunities. While the state government has made great strides in increasing girls enrolment in primary school, resources are limited and girls enrolment steeply drops off in upper primary and secondary education, limiting their chances to fully develop their potential.

You will be based in Pushkar, a thriving town next to a holy lake where many Indian pilgrims come to worship. The town is completely vegetarian, with no meat or alcohol allowed within its limits. Yoga, massage, camel trekking and holy festivals are just some of the attractions that have been drawing more international tourists every year.

This project works with an Italian-based charity who have been working in the holy city of Pushkar for the last twenty years. The organization established a school for under-privileged girls who are selected from the surrounding villages to be educated in the city. The school currently has an enrolment of 306 girls but is hoping to expand to 4000 in the near future. Volunteers are needed to help the girls develop their skills in English and other subject areas to improve their career prospects and help them get into college and university. In return, the friendly locals will make sure your stay is as comfortable and rewarding as possible.

The girls you will be teaching may be orphans, or girls with alcoholic or neglectful parents, yet they are eager to learn and improve their life chances. In small groups you will help them with English speaking, listening, writing, reading, grammar and vocabulary lessons. However, mainly they require your conversational skills to help them speak English in everyday situations.

As a volunteer teacher, you may either teach a class on your own or you may act as a teachers assistant within the class room. Depending on your experience with teaching and your level of comfort in the classroom, you will be assigned a specific role.

There is also the opportunity to teach whatever subjects or skills you have, such as theatre, arts and crafts, mathematics, etc. This is a very flexible placement and you will find the organisation deeply committed to the girls and their futures.

This charity has done much to improve the local area of Pushkar - from building houses for the girls families to live in, drilling water wells to provide villages with clean water, and distributing food and pensions to vulnerable citizens- and now you can help too.

You will need to make your way independently from Delhi International airport to Pushkar town. We will provide detailed instructions on how to reach Pushkar via an easy bus route through Jaipur.

You will stay in one of the many guesthouses available in the local area which we can help arrange depending on your requirements. You can rent a motorbike for around £5 a day to explore the local area.
