HIV/AIDS does not only affect the person infected with the disease but affects entire families and communities. Children who have been orphaned by AIDS are particularly disadvantaged and often miss out on the educational opportunities that can improve their situation in life.
The organisation you will be working with has 3 support centres/primary schools for orphans and other vulnerable children disadvantaged by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and poverty. These centres offer children from the ages of 4 to 15 years old support services in addition to primary education at no or little cost. You can help empower these children to become self-reliant as they grow into adulthood.
Your main task at the Orphan and Vulnerable Children Centre and Primary School will be reading to and teaching to the lower primary and nursery classes in a variety of subjects. You can also choose to help with administrative work like writing, typing, marking, or working on shared reports that are presented to the government and other partners.
You can help teach subjects like health, science, social studies, agriculture, mathematics, English, reading, games and sports, art and crafts. The school also has a female empowerment project which its implementation is integrated into all other existing programs. These centres also provides counselling and guidance to the children who attend them.
Working alongside local staff you can help achieve these goals and better the lives of the children in your care. You will have the opportunity to get involved in the organisation's other projects, including youth HIV/AIDS education, sports coaching, working with women in rural communities, and contributing to economic development and empowerment initiatives.
You will be met at Entebbe international airport in Kampala and taken to the project location.
You will be staying at the volunteer accommodation, where you will share with other volunteers.
