Medical Internship - Kenya

For medical students looking to gain developing country experience, or have a particular interest in HIV/AIDS treatment, this medical careership in Kenya provides a wide range of opportunities.

You will be placed in a Community Hospital which carries out a variety of medical services for the people of the local area. This 40-bed hospital consists of a comprehensive care clinic for HIV/AIDS patients, a maternity section plus maternal child health care and a family planning centre. Set in a converted hotel, it has received considerable external financial support and the assistance of a British University and British medical students. It has been in operation since 2003.

The hospital aims to provide outpatient and in-patient care free at point of contact to those who cannot afford treatment.

The Hospital includes:
* 40 beds, some in self-contained single rooms
* A well-equipped laboratory with experienced technologists
* An Accident and Emergency unit with an ambulance
* A pharmacy, open 24 hours a day
* A radiology dept for routine x-rays and special ones such as barium meal and ultra-sound scanning
* A maternity unit, with a delivery suite and premature babies unit
* A fully equipped operating theatre
* A kitchen to provide meals for patients and staff
* A refrigerated funeral home, with space for up to 16 individual body compartments

You will be dealing directly with the patients or working in the laboratory (according to your requirements and interests) such as:

* shadowing local doctors and nurses whilst on their rounds
* administering basic treatments where applicable
* monitoring and observation of patients
* record keeping and other administrative tasks
* patient sanitation, nutrition & education
* exploring different treatments for simple ailments
* participating in vaccination programs
* providing physical therapies

You will be met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and taken directly to the Project HQ. 

You will be housed in a flat which you will share with other volunteers. Where possible you will have your own room, however you may have to share with people of the same sex depending on the number of volunteers. The flat comes with all amenities, including a kitchen and hot water. You will be provided with bed linen.

* Minimum 2 months commitment - 30+ hours a week

* You should be studying Medicine or have some experience in the Medical field

* Good English

* Full travel & medical insurance

* Necessary vaccinations 

* Necessary flights & visas 

Fee: €1030 Euros Project Fee for 2 months (€80 for each month thereafter) +  £249 GBP one-off Placement Fee

What's Included: Project Fee includes all food, accommodation, airport pickup, 24 hour support, in-country orientation & tour of Nairobi and project activities.

We charge a flat, one-off Placement Fee of £249 GBP per person per project. This covers our costs for promoting the project and providing our services. We offer full pre-departure support (for all necessary flights, visas and vaccinations) and ongoing assistance throughout your placement.

What's not included: Flights, insurance, visas and vaccinations. Full assistance will be provided in getting all these sorted.
