Public Defender Careership - Peru
Location: Puno, Peru

Law students and professionals interested in gaining international legal experience are welcome to Puno, a city located on the shore of Lake Titicaca in the southeastern region of Peru.
You will work with the Public Defenders office in Puno to help resolve some of the many disputes that come through their doors. The Public Defender works to support individuals and families without the sufficient funds to hire a private lawyer to settle their disputes. You could be dealing with cases of mothers suing their estranged husbands for child support, property disputes, police harassment, child rights, women's rights, and a number of other issues. Every day will be different and throughout your time with the project you will gain special insight into Peruvian society and the Peruvian legal system.
You will shadow the local lawyers as they go about their daily activities. You could be assisting in consultations, raising participation and awareness in the legal system, joining the staff as they travel around the country to meet clients or investigate claims, helping to prepare documents, attending court sessions, researching cases and developing arguments. This is a very holistic and flexible placement that can be tailored to meet your specific learning or career goals. There are opportunities to conduct independent research projects for those interested.
In your free time you will have time to enjoy Puno and its surroundings. It is here where the Aymara civilisation was born and indigenous cultures continue to flourish. You can visit the floating reed islands of Lake Titicaca, investigate ancient archeological sites and enjoy the artistic vibe and nightlife of the city.
You will be met at Juliaca airport (easily accessible via Lima - Jorge Chavez international airport) where a project representative will to the project HQ.
You will be staying with a host family, nearby to where you will be working. You will have a private room, shared bathroom (with hot water) and all meals provided. There is free filtered water as well as laundry services available.
If you wish to stay long term (6 months or more) the organisation can help you find an apartment to rent.
* Min age 18 - Max age 80
* Minimum 3 months commitment - 30+ hours a week
* Enthusiasm and interest to work in law and public defence. This with previous experience, or who are already studying Law preferred.
* Good Spanish skills (lessons available)

$850 USD Project Fee per month + £249 GBP Placement Fee
What's Included:
Project Fee includes all food, accommodation, airport pickup, orientation, 24 hour support and project activities.
We charge a flat, one-off Placement Fee of £249 GBP per person per project. This covers our costs for promoting the project and providing our services. We offer full pre-departure support (for all necessary flights, visas and vaccinations) and ongoing assistance throughout your placement.
What's not included:
Flights, insurance, visas (if applicable) and vaccinations. Full assistance will be provided in getting all these sorted.
