Make a difference in the lives of vulnerable Indonesian children by teaching in Travelling English Schools on the islands of Bali and/or Sulawesi. You will volunteer your time between two different orphanages and two Slum Schools which have been set up in the most impoverished areas of the islands. Your students will include children who live and work on a 'Trash Mountain', a rubbish dump home to hundreds of children, children who have to beg on the streets, or those who have been separated from their families.
The Travelling English School was initiated to provide basic education to children and visits a number of outreach projects on the islands of Bali and Sulawesi. You will not only help the children learn English, thereby helping them to get good jobs in the future, but also to boost the children's confidence and sense of self-worth so that they can create different lives for themselves and their families.
You will assist in the English classes for these children on the different projects with the help of a local teacher and volunteer co-ordinator. This placement allows you to learn a lot about the islands, the culture and language of the local people. Anyone over 18 is welcome onto the outreach projects in Bali; for the projects in Sulawesi volunteers will first have to pass the trial period in Bali as Sulawesi is a more challenging environment and the communities you will work with are less accustomed to foreigners. No prior teaching experience is necessary.
You will need to fly into Denpassar Airport, where you will be met by a project representative and taken to the project HQ.
Accommodation is very basic but you can pay extra for an upgrade (air-conditioning, swimming pool, etc). Please get in touch for more information.
