If you are interested in development, education, and livelihood training, this project in Kenya offers the opportunity to combine classroom teaching and hands-on training to marginalised young people who are keen to become self-sufficient.
You will work with an organisation that provides agricultural, animal husbandry, farming, and other vocational training skills for deaf, deaf blind, and visually impaired young adults, who are all too often excluded from employment opportunities. Most of your students will come from a very poor background. The training they receive at the centre enables them to work on their own and support themselves in the future. Most of the times they are trained in practical work but they also attend some theoretical classes.
You will help the trainees learn various skills on the centre's farm centred around working with crops or with animals. In the field you will show your trainees how to weed, garden, build irrigation and harvest the crops. On the farm you will show them how to feed the animals, milk the cows, clean the enclosures and learn general veterinary health care. You will work alongside locally trained staff who will guide and advise you throughout your placement.
Finally, you will compliment the hands-on work by teaching skills in the classroom and encouraging the trainees to take note of the activities they have learned. If you are able, you can also teach how to read and write in Braille, and communicate in sign-language.
In your free time you can explore Nairobi, one of Africa's most vibrant capital cities and venture further afield to visit some of the continent's best wildlife attractions, rainforests, gorgeous Indian Ocean beaches and the historic Rift Valley.
You will be met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by a project coordinator and taken directly to the project HQ.
You will be housed in a flat which you will share with other volunteers. Where possible you will have your own room but depending on the number of volunteers you may have to share with people of the same sex. The flat comes with all amenities, including a kitchen, bathroom and hot water. You will be provided with bed linen.
