Introduction
You will volunteer with a leading not-for-profit conservation volunteer organisation, who work throughout Australia. They offer exciting conservation programs, which enable you to help protect, preserve and restore the Australian environment.
Daily Life
You can be placed in an urban, regional and remote locations, getting involved in a wide variety of activities, such as: . Tree planting . Seed collection . Endangered species protection . Weed control . Fencing . Walking trail construction . Flora and fauna surveys . Heritage restoration . Environmental monitoring
Once you start the Conservation Experience you are likely to spend time in regional areas, returning to major cities only at the end of your placement. In Australia especially, cities like Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are entry points to the program; most volunteers will be transferred to regional centres for the duration of their Conservation Experience, returning to their starting point only at the end of the program.
Volunteers are usually placed in teams of between 6 and 10 people. A Conservation Volunteers Team Leader manages each team. The Leader provides all training required on-site, explains the conservation aims of the project to the volunteers, and is responsible for the safe conduct and management of each project.
Projects normally run for 5 days per week, with one or two days free per week for relaxing or sightseeing. Project hours are from 8am – 4pm daily, although this varies on some projects when required by seasonal conditions or project activities.
Volunteers travel to a different project location every week or two. This means that in a 6-week Conservation Experience, volunteers will generally visit at least 3 different project locations, and will usually undertake 2 or 3 different types of project activities. We incorporate as much variety into our program as possible, while achieving our essential conservation outcomes.
We do not offer volunteers a choice of projects, as these vary according to seasonal conditions and conservation priorities. We do our best to ensure a variety of projects or locations during each Conservation Experience.
Accommodation
Accommodation varies according to project and location. Typical accommodation can include caravans, hostels, shearers’ quarters, bunkhouses, and camping (we supply tents). Volunteers should bring a sleeping mat as well as a sleeping bag, and be prepared to share.
Meals: For breakfast we supply cereals, bread or toast, tea and coffee. Lunch is normally a selfmade sandwich and fruit; in the evening we enjoy a meal prepared by the group, typically something like pasta, roast or a vegetarian option. Volunteers help with the preparation of meals and cleaning up of dishes, plus some domestic duties as required. We rely on every volunteer to participate fully in the program, and the evening meal is a popular part of the day.
